FARM DEGREE PROGRAM

The African University College of Agriculture plans to offer its inaugural cohort of students a first degree Farm Program starting in August 2024. Contact us, if you are interested in supporting this effort. We would love to get back to you to discuss the next steps.

About the Program

The degree Program is a 4-year, hands-on program for young and beginning farmers that provides skills-based education in what is required to successfully run a small farm business. In this non-degree, in-person program, participants will engage with faculty crop and animal science professionals, researchers, and farmers to learn about animal and crop production in the context of a curriculum focused on the issues that impact food producers and the food system at large. This degree program is housed at the Baiyee House, providing participants the opportunity to interact with and learn from experts while also gaining valuable applied knowledge through an entire growing season at the integrated sustainable Student Farm. This degree program will prepare the student to be a successful producer and advocate in the local food industry. The program is competitive with a limited number of positions available.

Program Structure

In exchange for tuition students will work on the farm in the mornings to learn all the hands-on and physical skills necessary to run a farm.

We will do a weekly farm walk that we will use in combination with our plans to develop our weekly priorities.

Students will rotate through different management roles on the farm, including managing our farm stand, our online store, our record keeping, outreach and marketing, food safety and later in the seasonserve in a leadership role.

We will have a weekly learning session each week that will cover the different elements in caring for vegetable crops, fruits, and animals, soil, water and people while building an organizational structure to run a successful farm business. These sessions may include a reading, a lecture and an activity of some kind.

We plan to visit local farms and food organizations.

Students will develop and implement the annual plan for the student-run Farm.

Each Student will develop a business plan for a farm they plan to implement after graduation.

African University will provide a seed funding of 100,000 Frs CFA for each gaduating student to start a farm.

STUDENT FARM

An student-run integrated sustainable Student Farm will grow livestock, vegetable and fruit crops on the part of the land south of the Baiyee House in Tali. Student workers and volunteers will plant, cultivate and harvest produce using low input and organic practices. The majority of the livestock and produce will be sold at a farm stand on campus throughout the year. Some of the farm products may be processed to add value to them.
